Book for children with Marc Chagall illustrations, published by Vilner Farlag B.A. Kletzin, Petrograd, 1917. 

Size is 4.5 x 6.1 inches. Chagall´s first Yiddish book and his only illustrated children´s book. The drawings of Shtetl life are in the faux-naif style of other works by the artist at this time, which combine modernist elements with traditional Jewish iconography. The two tales in verse were composed by Pinkus Kahanovich (1884-1950), also known as "Der Nister". 

Kahanovich was a major Yiddish author, philosopher, translator and critic. When Stalin unleashed the last pogrom to finally destroy the remaining Jewish culture in the USSR, Kahanovich was arrested and died in the Gulag in 1947. There is one copy of this book in the MoMA and one at the University of Texas. 

A very good copy of this very rare book, no deaccession stamps but original publisher´s price stamp on rear cover.

Returns & Exchanges

Unsatisfactory items may be returned within 14 days of receipt for your choice of a store credit or a full refund. In order to qualify for a refund, items must first be returned in the exact same condition they were shipped. By default we ship via USPS, and provide the option to ship via FedEx or UPS. Shipping and handling costs are not refundable for any items that were already shipped, either returned or not. At our discretion, a restocking and relisting fee of up to USD 40 could be applied for some returned items, although this is very rarely applied.
