Wagner, Richard - Signed Letter About Bayreuth Festival 1873

Item #: M3916-D4E

Famous German opera composer (1813-1883), signed letter ("To the Patrons of the Performance Festival in Bayreuth"), with printed text, asking to patrons for donations to support and save the promised first Bayreuth Festival, which was (finally) going to take place in the summer of 1876.

This is a fantastic, historically important document, with the authentic signature of Wagner at the end. Wagner describes the many difficulties of the project, that they can not open in 1875 as planned due to financial problems and that his enemies will be celebrating his many troubles. Problems will be later solved by raising funds giving concerts where he conducted his own music, selling rights from his previous compositions, donations from the sponsors and the big help from Ludwig II of Bavaria who provided a loan for the missing money. This funds were used to finish building his own theater at Bayreuth, create new productions of his Ring (the last 2 operas would be world premiered at the first Festival in 1876) and two summers of rehearsals with the musicians.

Document has 4 pages together in one large single piece of paper, each page is 9 x 13 inches, Wagner signed at the end of the text (in German, sold untranslated) and next to the date Bayreuth, August 30th 1873. Lightly creased with folds, and a few light stains, nothing affecting the signature, in very good condition.
