Item #: H3264-M6D

American composer and virtuoso pianist (1829–1869), born as the son of a Jewish businessman, Gottschalk is today considered one of the first figures in American music to attain an international reputation as a composer. Gottschalk spent most of his life abroad and died in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at age 40.

Rare cabinet photograph signed and inscribed by him on verso, dated in Rio de Janeiro on October 25th, 1869, less than 2 months before his death (Gottschalk contracted yellow fever and collapsed during a concert in Rio de Janeiro on November 24th, died 3 weeks later, on December 9th).

Gottschalk writes on verso "To my much respected and beloved friend Don Carlos Hornos, with kindest remembrances of himself & family. M Gottschalk, Rio de Janeiro 25th, October 1869".

An original cabinet photo by famous Brazilian photographer Insley Pacheco, Rio de Janeiro, 4.25 x 6.5 inches, in excellent condition.
