Schirmer in 1943 to conmemorate the 60th birthday of his president, famous French-born American pianist, musicologist and publiser Carl Engel (1883-1944). This is copy number 177 of a total of only 300 that were made, and is signed by Carl Engel himself who dedicates the book to star conductor Fritz Reiner - with a short sentiment ("To and old friend"). 234 pages including articles about Engel, music topics, and some with photos. La Vie Parisienne was a very famous French magazine, continuously published for over a hundred years (until 1970), it covered novel, music, theater, the arts, politics and sports. Beautifully illustrated, this is a bound volume with 51 magazines from the first year of publication - each 12-page magazine is included in this volume, starting with Nr. 1 (Jan 3rd, 1863) through Nr. 52 (December 26th, 1863) - Only one is missing (Nr. 44). Directed by Emile Marcelin (1825-1887) for the first 24 years, the beautiful artwork of La Vie parisienne reflected the stylization of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, this was a highly successful publication in its time. Each magazine is 10.5 x 13 inches, all in good to very good condition with some rust, bound in one volume with hardcovers. See pictures of cover and some example pages.
