    Star soprano (1843-1919), probably the greatest of the second half of the 19th Century.  Original portrait of her, hand painted, attributed on verso to Scottish-American painter William Russell Smith (1812-1896), with the date 1889. No signature, but verso inscriptions match very well some typical verso inscriptions found in paintings by him (see HERE). We believe this could be an authentic painting by William Russell Smith and not by any members of his family or someone else. Framed, total size is 19.1 x 23.25 inches (total), actual painting is 14.6 x 18.75 inches (visible window size). Frame has some damage on borders and should be replaced, painting is in great condition, not examined outside the frame.
