Aga Khan III (1887-1957) was the 48th imam of his community in India, held his honorary title for over 7 decades until his death. This is a photo postcard of the Bayreuth Festival theater, signed by the Aga Khan in 1956, his last visit to the Festival around a year before his death in July 1957. Postcard is 5.75 x 4 inches and is mounted in an album page, on verso is an unsigned photo postcard of Shahzadi Begum, his first wife.

Published by Giz, 1928, Moscow-Leningrad. Full title is "How Kol´ka Pankin Flew to Brazil, and Piotka Ershov didn´t believe anything. Size is 5.1 x 6.8 inches, in very good condition. This is a delightful children´s book, but one that triggered the Soviet authorities´ suspicion of it being a parody of the Marxist dialectic and hidden political tract. The story involves two little boys in banter between the ideal and the real, mirroring much of the early days of the Revolution between communist ideologies. The authorities may have also been offended with the parrots on the front cover and monkeys on the rear, possibly reading more than the author intended, but the date was on the cusp of deepening suppression and conformity to party doctrine which jelled in 1930, when Kharms was arrested for sedition and his work banned for the first time, and he was exiled.  The illustrator Evgeniia Konstatinovna Evenbakh (1889-1981) was an important children´s book artist who studied under V.V. Lebedev and initially employed Constructivist techniques in her work. The present work is considered to be her finest. OCLC locates only one institutional holding, in Princeton.  

Published in Leningrad by Giz, 1930. Original color lithographed wrappers, 12 pages, illustrated by Vladimir Mikhailovich Kosnashevich. A rare children´s book by the great Russian absurdist poet and playwright Daniil Kharms (1905-1942). With the banning of this adult work and that of other members of the avant-garde group Oberiu (Association for Real Art), Kharms (born Daniil Luvachev) and other members of the group turned to children´s books as a refuge for work and a means to channel their creative imaginations.  Igra is one of Kharms´ most child-friendly poems. Here, three little boys run around their town, pretending to be modern forms of transportation: Petka is an automobile, Vasa a boat, and Mishka, a Soviet airplane.  V. M. Kosnashevich proved that he was a master in drawing the body language of children in his loose, spirited line drawings for this work. Kharms soon fell out with the Soviet authorities, was initially exiled and later charged with treason. He died in the psychiatric ward of the Leningrad Prison. OCLC locates 4 holdings of this book worldwide (Columbia, Princeton, Amherst and Univ. of Chicago).

Kim Kashkashian (born in 1952) is an Armenian-American violist. She has been featured on over 30 albums and performs pieces from both classical and contemporary composers, working among others with Gidon Kremer and Yo Yo Ma, the Vienna Philharmonic and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Photo Size 5 x 7 inches
