Singers - Autograph Manuscripts

Lot of 4 items including 2 autograph letters signed of the American tenor Roland Hayes (1887-1977), one is a 2 page letter, dated in 1943, size is 5.25 x 8.25 inches, neatly folded and in very good condition. The other letter is 1 page, written in Brookline, Massachusetts, dated in 1967, with clearer handwriting and signature, size is 7.25 x 10.5 inches, also in very good condition.  Also included: a 5 x 6 inch unsigned photo of him in old age, clear image in excellent condition, and an unsigned publicity photo playbill and biography of his daughter, soprano Afrika Hayes, including excerpts from reviews of her concert recitals (including a joint recital with her father), this item is 7.25 x 11 inches, in very good condition. Not sold separately, only as a lot. 

Belgian soprano (1867-1942). Autograph note in French signed by her on a card. Size is 4.5 x 3.5 inches, in excellent condition.

Belgian soprano (1888-1973), one of France's most celebrated opera singers during the 1910's to the 1930's. Autograph Note Signed, written on two sides of a folio, in French, sold untranslated. Each side is 6.25 x 8 inches, in excellent condition. 

German soprano (1885-1955) who had an international career in Europe and the United States. Album page signed by her with a short sentiment. Size is 5.1 x 6.75 inches, small loss of paper over the upper-left corner, central fold, otherwise in excellent condition.

German-born British baritone (1850-1934), pianist, and conductor, a close friend to Johannes Brahms. Autograph letter in German (untranslated) signed by him, dated December 6, 1889, to a gentleman, concerning a concert in London with the composer Francesco Paolo Tosti. Size is 4.5 x 7.1 inches, 2 written pages in one sheet (front and back), printed letterhead, central fold, in very good condition.

German-born British baritone (1850-19349, pianist, conductor, composer, and academic teacher. Autograph music quote on a calendar page with 2 bars from an unknown piece signed by him. Size is 4.9 x 6.75 inches, minor cracks, some loss of paper over the upper-right corner, in overall good condition.

Belgian Soprano (1883-?) associated with the Paris Opera Comique, autograph letter signed, 2 pages, written in French, sold untranslated. Size of each page is 5.25 x 7 inches, some creases and folds, otherwise in good condition. 

French baritone (1814-1858), autograph note signed, 1 page written in French, sold untranslated, dated in 1850. Size is 4.25 x 6.25 inches, in excellent condition. Rare!

Double signed album page of German soprano and mezzo-soprano Anna Hildach (1852-1935)  and her husband, German composer and baritone Eugen Hildach (1849-1924), creator of many songs. This page is signed in 1898 with bold handwriting and signatures, size is 5 x 8 inches, in excellent condition.   

German baritone (1831-1893) who sang the role of Alberich in the first performance of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen at Bayreuth in 1876, and Klingsor in the premiere of Parsifal in 1882. Autograph letter in German (untranslated) signed by him, no date, where he addresses the music publisher Härtel, concerning some music scores by Rubinstein, Schubert, and Graedener he needs for upcoming concerts. Size is 5.8 x 8.8 inches, 2 written pages in one sheet (front and back), creases, folds, embossed letterhead, in overall very good condition.

Dutch soprano (1872-1939). Autograph letter in German signed by her, dated April 2, 1910, to the composer Georg Schumann (1866-1952), concerning the performance of his opera “Ruth” in Dordrecht :  “...I am pleased to inform you that your work was a great success in Dordrecht; the audience was very enthusiastic and did not stop applauding at the end, even after the first scene of Naomi and Ruth there was a great cheer. Mr. [Johann Eduard] Erdmann asked me to tell you about it when I would see you again, but since I do not know when that will be, I write it to you. I hope you will allow me to sing the part for you, which, although extremely difficult, suits me very well. The preparation was very short (in 2 1⁄2 days I had to sing it with a very swollen throat!), but Mr. E. was very pleased with the replacement for Ms. Strauch! - If you ever have time and I am free, I would be happy if you call me some time for the Ruth...”. Size is 5.2 x 6.7 inches each page, 4 written pages in one folded sheet, embossed letterhead, in very good condition.

German bass (1895-1963), typed letter signed, 2 pages, dated in Vienna in 1959, written in German, sold untranslated. Addressed to Karl Maria Zwissler, the director of the Mainz Stadtisches Theater. Size is 8.25 x 11.75 inches, small bullet holes on the left, otherwise in excellent condition. 

Hungarian-born bass-baritone (1813-1883), Hölzel was the singer of choice for the role of Beckmesser in the world premiere of Die Meistersinger in 1868. Gorgeous autograph music quote with 11 bars from a song for voice and piano, signed by him and dated in 1874, inscribed to his sister-in-law, Lulu Gerstäcker, in Vienna. Size is 5.25 x 8.5 inches, in excellent condition.

German tenor (1916-1993), known for Wagnerian and other heroic tenor roles. Typed Letter Signed, dated in Bayreuth in 1951, written in German and sold untranslated. Size is 6 x 8.25 inches, in excellent condition. 

Czech bass and opera director (1875-1948), set of 1 autograph musical quote signed, dated in Prague in 1944 and 1 signed receipt, dated in 1950, both attached to a 7.5 x 11.25 sheet. In excellent condition, not sold separately.

Hungarian soprano (1891-1976), autograph letter signed, on personal letterhead, dated in Munich in 1964. 3 pages, written in German, sold untranslated. Size of each page is 5.75 x 8.25 inches, in excellent condition. 

Ukrainian tenor (1882-1959).  Set of 8 printed scores of songs, signed by him on the front cover, with markings inside.  Some scores include works by Taneyev and Rachmaninoff.  Various sizes ranging from 8.6 x 11.4 inches to 10.5 x 14.25 inches, from 4 pages and up, all in good condition or better. SOLD ONLY AS A LOT, NOT SOLD SEPARATELY.

French bass-baritone (1860-1930), voice teacher, who performed at la Monnaie in Brussels for many years. Short autograph note in French (untranslated) signed by him, no date, where he addresses a “Poète”: “…n’y a t-il pas quelque rôle intéressant pour moi dans le Maschere de Mascagni?…”. Size is 5.4 x 8.2 inches, 1 page, folds and creases, in very good condition.

German mezzo-soprano (1826-1894), dramatic actress, and teacher of singing and theatrical performance who won great distinction in Europe during the third quarter of the 19th century. She was a niece of the composer Richard Wagner and created the role of Elisabeth in Wagner's Tannhauser in 1845, less than a week after her 19th birthday. Autograph letter signed, 3 pages, written in German, sold with a typed English language translation. Size of each page is 5.5 x 8.5 inches, in excellent condition. Rare!

Italian soprano (1898-1966), autograph letter signed, using the letterhead of the Hotel Terminus in the Hague. Addressed to Leo Riemens, written in Italian, sold untranslated. Size is 5.5 x 8.5 inches, in very good condition.

Famous American tenor (1897-1982), very active at the Metropolitan Opera in the 1930s and 40s. Autograph note signed, dated in 1948, 1 page written in English. Size is 7.25 x 10.25 inches, in excellent condition. 

Moravian soprano (1887-1982), famous star of the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Autograph note signed, on the stationary of the St. Regis Hotel, New York, dated in 1933. Very clear handwriting and signature. Written on 1 page of a 4-page folded document, size of each page is 5.25 x 6.75 inches, in excellent condition. Also included: unsigned photo, shown in role, sized at 7.25 x 10 inches, in excellent condition. Not sold separately. 

Austrian-German contralto (1839-1899), celebrated both in the opera and concert repertoire, frequently performing with both Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms, and wife of the famous violinist Joseph Joachim. Autograph letter signed, written in Hamburg and dated in 1894. Written in German, sold untranslated. Size is 4.25 x 7 inches, 4 pages, mounting traces on the final page but otherwise in excellent condition. ALSO INCLUDED is a photo postcard showing Amalie Joachim, handwritten by someone else, not her. Size is 3.5 x 5.5 inches, some creases, in good condition.

Austrian-German contralto (1839-1899), celebrated both in the opera and concert repertoire, frequently performing with both Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms, and wife of the famous violinist Joseph Joachim.  Lot of 1 Autograph music quote signed, written on a 3 x 5 inch card, dated in New York in 1894, along with 4 unsigned concert programs/playbills from the Berlin Philharmonie, also in1894 ranging in size from 5. 5 x 8.5 inches to 6.75 x 9 inches, slight rust and a few stains, otherwise in good condition. Not sold separately.

Pair of 2 autograph letters signed, both 2 pages in length, one written in German, 5.5 x 8.75 inches, the other in French, dated in Paris in 1879 on a 5 x 8 inch document, both sold untranslated. In excellent condition, not sold separately. 

Dutch soprano (1879-1932) and also a music educator. Autograph letter with the letterhead of the Savoy Hotel signed by her, dated in London, on April 2nd, 1913. Size is 6.1 x 8 inches, central fold, in excellent condition.

Welsh tenor (1891-1963), autograph note signed, 1 page written on the stationary of the Savage Club, London, dated in 1931. Size is 4.5 x 7 inches, several small creases and folds, but otherwise in very good condition.

French bass (1868-1933), who starred in the world premiere performances of Arrigo Boito's Nerone. Autograph letter signed, written in London, dated in 1906. Written in French, sold untranslated. Four folded pages, text is on first and third pages. Size is 5 x 7 inches, in excellent condition.

Typed "LS" (signed and sealed) contract with La Scala, Milan, dated in 1928, 4-page document, with Journet's handwritten signature and official stamp of La Scala Theatre director on the last page. Size is 8.5 x 12 inches, in excellent condition.

Both are written in English, sized at 5 x 7.75 inches, in excellent condition. Not sold separately.

Austrian bass-baritone also known as Josip Kaschmann (1847 or 1850 (?)-1925). Autograph letter signed, 2 pages on a folded 4-page document, written in Italian, signed with last name only, and sold with a typed English translation. Original letter size is 5.75 x 7.75 inches with clear handwriting and signature, in excellent condition. 

Croatian bass-baritone also known as Josip Kaschmann (1850-1925). Album page with a short quote "Singing is the best interpreter of our feelings" signed by him and dated in Naples, 1916. Size is 11.8 x 8.7 inches, rust stains, in excellent condition.

American soprano and impresario (1842-1916). Autograph letter signed, undated, 2 pages in English, with very clear handwriting. Size is 4.5 x 6.9 inches, some stains on empty pages, but pages with written text are in excellent, beautifully preserved condition. ALSO INCLUDED is an unsigned CDV, with a printed signature, shown as herself. Beautiful photo, size is 2.5 x 4.1 inches, in excellent condition.
