Singers - Autograph Manuscripts

Legendary German soprano and later voice teacher (1888-1976), who had an important international career mostly associated with the German repertoire.  Original telegram sent by her to Italian superstar conductor Arturo Toscanini, dated April 9, 1955. Size is 7.9 x 5.6 inches, crack over the left border, creases, folds, some dust stains, in good condition.

Legendary German soprano and later voice teacher (1888-1976), set of 1 autograph letter signed on the stationary of the Orrington Hotel in Evanston Illinois, dated in 1964 and 1 typed letter hand-signed at the bottom, on her home letterhead in Santa Barbara, California, dated in 1970. Both are 1 page and written in English. Size of the earlier letter is 6 x 9.5 inches, with several mounting traces and small tear and crease on bottom right, otherwise in very good condition, typed letter is 8.5 x 11 inches, several very small creases and folds, otherwise in excellent condition. Not sold separately.

One is in German, dated in 1972, sold untranslated, Size is 5.75 x 7.5 inches with 2 bullet holes on left, otherwise in excellent condition. The second letter is typed in English, dated in 1966, sized 8.25 x 11 inches with 2 bullet holes and otherwise in excellent condition.  ALSO INCLUDED is one signed card with 2 bullet holes on the top. Size is 5.5 x 3.5 inches, in excellent condition.

Celebrated English concert and operatic soprano (1834-1906). Autograph letter signed, undated. Clear handwriting and bold signature. Manuscript's size is 7.6 x 6.1 inches in excellent beautifully preserved condition. ALSO INCLUDED is an unsigned CDV, shown as herself. Photo by Elliot and Fry, London. English soprano (1834-1906). Autograph note signed by her with letterhead, about upcoming performances, mounted over a slightly larger piece of soft cardboard. Size is 4.1 x 6.25 inches, 1 page, in excellent condition.

English soprano and leading voice teacher (1834-1906). Set of 2 Autograph notes signed by her with letterhead, 1 page each, both written in English. One of these is sized at 3.75 x 6.25 inches, the other is 3.5 x 5.25 inches, both in excellent condition. Not sold separately. 

German soprano (1897-1994), who had a major career prior to the Second World War. Set of three typed letters signed, two of these are 8.25 x 11.75 inch documents, the other is on a 4 x 5.75 inch card. Each is 1 page, written in German, sold untranslated, and in excellent condition. Not sold separately. 

Austrian-American singer (1898-1981), and actress; mostly based in the United States, married to composer Kurt Weill, and best remembered for performing his songs. Autograph album page signed by her, dated in 1971. Size is 5.1 x 3.8 inches, in excellent condition.

French bass (1791-1871), creator of many roles in operas by Rossini, Meyerbeer, and Donizetti. Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, no date, addressed to the French bass Louis-Henri Obin, about music issues. Size is 5.1 x 8 inches, 2 written pages in one sheet (front and back), minor stains, in excellent condition. ALSO INCLUDED is a modern print of the singer shown in role. Size is 6.3 x 10.1 inches, in excellent condition.

Size is 5 x 7.8 inches, 1 written page in one folded sheet, in very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is a colorized print of him in Les Huguenots. Size is 5.75 x 8.75 inches, in excellent condition.

French bass (1791-1871), creator of many roles in operas by Rossini, Meyerbeer, and Donizetti. Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him and dated in 1857. Size is 5.2 x 8.1 inches, 2 written pages in one folded sheet, in very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is a vintage lithograph of him. Size is 4.8 x 7.25 inches, in excellent condition.

French bass (1791-1871), creator of many roles in operas by Rossini, Meyerbeer, and Donizetti. Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, dated May 10th, 1837. Size is 5 x 7.75 inches, 1 written page, folds and creases, otherwise in excellent condition.

American soprano (1897-1941) married for several years to famed German bass-baritone Michael Bohnen. Signed album page, dated in 1929 in New York City. Size is 7 x 8.75 inches, in excellent condition. 

Italian tenor (1902-1960). Typed letter in Italian (untranslated) signed by him and addressed to the director of La Scala theater, dated in Rome, 1933, about contract issues. Size is 8.75 x 11 inches, central fold, storage holes, in very good condition.

Star Swedish opera singer (1820-1887), one of the most regarded singers of the 19th century and extraordinarily popular in her time. Autograph letter signed, 4 pages, written in English on all 4 sides of a folded document. Size of each page is 5.25 x 8 inches, several small rips and tears not affecting the text, otherwise in good condition.

Twin brothers, born the same day, died in the same year (1832-1896), both recognized as highly talented singers and actors, presented highly popular concerts in the 1860s (Anatole was also a composer).  This set includes a 1 page autograph note signed by Anatole, 4 x 5.25 inches, in excellent condition,  and 2 autograph letters signed by Hyppolyte, each of which is 2 pages long, one of them dated in 1862, the other does not give the year, both are 5.25 x 8.25 inches  with small creases and folds on each, and small bullet holes on the undated document, otherwise in very good condition. All three items are written in French and sold untranslated. Not sold separately. 

Austrian soprano (b. 1925), typed letter signed, written in Vienna, dated in 1962. One folded page on her own letterhead, written in English. Size is 6 x 8.25 inches, in excellent condition. Also included: one unsigned publicity photo, shown as herself. Size is 3.5 x 5.5 inches, in excellent condition.

Austrian-American bass (1888-1967), signed and inscribed card with attached gold "Good Luck" coin given to American Mezzo Soprano Regina Resnik following one of her performances in Vienna, dated April 1961. Card is 2.5 x 4 inches, in excellent condition. Short sentiment on both sides of card, with very clear handwriting and signature (signed "Emanuel and Joan"). 

American soprano (1856-1883), who died tragically at 27. An album page signed by her with a short sentiment. Size is 6.75 x 8 inches, in very good condition. Very rare!

Russian-born French soprano (1860-1936). One autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by her, 4 pages, undated. Size of each page is 6.5 x 8.25 inches, very small tear on third and fourth pages not affecting text, otherwise in very good condition.

To a friend: “…comme vous seriez gentil de faire un petit echo voici le Figaro qui parle de mes representation de Tristan à St. Petersbourg…”. 4 pp. In-8 With letterhead.  Different sizes, lengths, and conditions (see scans provided for a detailed view). Lohengrin (Wagner), full score for singers and piano, signed by Pilar Lorengar. Complete, with all 342 pages and covers, in excellent condition. Schirmer, NY, 1963 Edition. Size is 7.5 x 11 inches.

Star French soprano (1890-1979), one of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos during the 1930's and 40's. Autograph letter signed, 2 pages, written in French, sold untranslated. Total size, unfolded, is 7 x 9 inches, in excellent condition.

Austrian soprano (1841-1908); and Moravian composer (1821-1897), conductor, and impresario. An album page signed by both artists: Maretzek dated her signature in Baltimore, on April 2, 1873; while Lucca did not date her signature. There is a third signature (unidentified) dated in Baltimore in 1873 as well. Size is 4.75 x 7.6 inches, in excellent condition.

German mezzo-soprano (1928-2021), signed business card, possibly signed by her secretary on official stationary. Size is 3.75 x 6 inches, in excellent condition. 

Irish baritone (1847-1923), autograph musical quote signed of the opening bars of the Irish folk song "Oh Molly Bawn" composed by  Samuel Lover, dated in May 1890.  Bold handwriting and signature, singed as "Wm. Ludwig". 9 x 11 inch album page, several small cracks on far left and small tear on the right, not affecting any of the text or signature. Otherwise in excellent condition.

Italian bass (1870-1962), autograph letter signed, written in Milan, dated in 1948. 1 page, written in Italian, sold untranslated. Size is 5.5 x 8.5 inches, 4 small bullet holes at top outside the borders of the text and signature, otherwise in excellent condition.

American soprano/mezzo soprano (1861-1949), autograph note signed, written in Engish, dated in 1888, one 4.5 x 7 inch page with scotch tape in the middle of the page and small rust on verso but in otherwise good condition.  Also included: one very attractive unsigned cabinet photo, shown as herself, photo by Aimé Dupont, New York. Size is 4.25 x 6.5 inches, slight rust on verso, but otherwise in excellent condition. Not sold separately. 

American soprano/mezzo soprano (1861-1949).  Unsigned cabinet photograph, shown possibly in role, mounted onto larger piece of cardboard which contains her signature and inscription, dated in 1898. Cabinet photo is 4.25 x 6.5 inches, with a gold-plated printed signature of the photographer Reutlinger, Paris and is in excellent inscription. Total item size is 9.5 x 12.5 inches, some rips and tears on the edges of the cardboard and mounting traces on verso, but otherwise beautiful and well-preserved historic item. 

English tenor (1847-1886). His signature cut attached to an album page next to a clip of a concert with him in the cast.  Total size is 7.1 x 6 inches (signature clip is 4.1 x 3 inches), in excellent condition. Very rare!

Russian soprano (1895-?), signature cut of 1.5 x 5.75 inches mounted onto an album page which also contains an unsigned half-tone photo of her. Bold handwriting and signature. Total item size is 5.5 x 7.5 inches, in excellent condition.

Spanish soprano (1808-1836) who commonly sang both contralto and soprano parts, and was one of the best-known opera singers of the XIX century. Incomplete autograph note in French (sold untranslated) written by Malibran (not signed), mounted on cardboard, when she was leaving England to the United States (New York). Size is 4 x 4.8 inches, incomplete, in very good condition

Spanish soprano (1808-1836) who commonly sang both contralto and soprano parts, and was one of the best-known opera singers of the XIX century.  Interesting set of 4 autograph letters about the life and death of the great singer, as follows:1. By Franoue, F. (Malibran's sister-in-law) dated September 1836; 2 pages long.2. Dal Pozzo, F. 3-page autograph letter reporting on Malibran's injury on accident, no date.3. Chessman, L. B. Autograph letter dated 1824 addressed to De Beriot (Malibran's husband) about Maria's annulment of previous marriage, freeing her to marry De Beriot.4. Unknown author. 2-page autograph note signed -a contemporary biographical account of Malibran's. SOLD ONLY AS A LOT, NOT SOLD SEPARATELY.

Spanish soprano (1808-1836) who commonly sang both contralto and soprano parts, and was one of the best-known opera singers of the XIX century. Original, genuine receipt for $1075 francs signed by the star soprano dated October 19, 1830, issued by Thèatre Royal Italien (Paris). Size is 7.3 x 7.7 inches, left border irregularly cut, folds, in overall excellent condition. ALSO INCLUDED is a vintage lithograph mounting over an irregularly cut soft cardboard depicting the soprano, published by J. McCormick in London (1829) upon a drawing by artist T. Fairland. Total size is 12.5 x 14.75 inches, in very good condition.

Italian tenor (1817-1887), known for having created the role of Rodolfo in the world premiere of Verdi´s "Luisa Miller" in 1849. Autograph letter signed, dated in Venice in 1856. One page, in Italian, sold untranslated.

Ukrainian tenor (1883-1921), 2 signed postcards, one including image of him as Don Jose in Bizet's Carmen, dated in 1921, the other is dated in 1918. Both written in German, sold untranslated. Size of each is 3.5 x 5.5 inches, in excellent condition. Not sold separately.
