Literature Autographs (over $500)

Norwegian poet/writer (1832-1910) and recipient of the Nobel Prize of Literature in 1903. Signed photo postcard, dated by him in Rome in 1904. Size is 3.4 x 5.4 inches, in excellent condition.

Argentine short-story writer (1899-1986), essayist, poet and translator, and a key figure in Spanish-language literature. Signed half-tone photo, from the period when he was blind, mounted on paper from an album page. Photo was given to a friend who was also a writer, size is 4.4 x 6.75 inches, in excellent condition.

American writer (1835-1910) whose real name was Samuel Clemens, humorist, publisher and author of the celebrated novel "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (1876) and its sequel "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" (1885). St. Valentin's Day card, dated by him in 1902. Size is 7.9 x 5.75 inches, creases, in very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is an original photograph by George G. Rockwood, size is 4.9 x 6.9 inches, in excellent condition.

French poet (1889-1963) and also writer, designer, playwright, artist and filmmaker. Signed card, with a short sentiment, attached with a half-tone photograph of him, dated by him in 1960. Size is 5 x 3.25 inches, in excellent condition.

British writer (1859-1930) and medical doctor, creator of the famous character Sherlock Holmes in 1887. Autograph note signed, dated in 1914, thanking someone for photos of Sherlock. One page, on letterhead paper from the Queen´s Hotel in Montreal, Canada. Size is 6.2 x 9.25 inches, folds, in excellent condition.

Austrian neurologist (1856-1939) and the founder of psychoanalysis. Autograph letter with his letterhead written in German, with his clear and bold signature on verso, dated in 1932, to Paul Epstein discussing his new study group of Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles. Freud expresses that "Analysis certain needs fellowship and the exchange of ideas", and is happy with the fact that Epstein (who was an enthusiastic supporter of psychoanalysis) founded the Psychoanalytic Study Group in Los Angeles. Sold with translation and transcription, see last picture. Size is 5.6 x 9 inches, 1 sheet (written on both sides), central fold, minor crack over the upper border, otherwise in excellent condition.

German writer and translator (1830-1914), winner of the Nobel Prize of Literature in 1910. Signed photo postcard, size is 3.4 x 5.4 inches, minor stains, otherwise in very good condition.

American author, disability rights advocate, and political activist (1880-1968). Keller lost her sight and hearing before she was 2 years old. Nice black-and-white photograph signed and inscribed by her with a short sentiment, dated 1941. Size is 7.9 x 9.9 inches, mounting traces on verso, otherwise in excellent condition.

American poet (1807-1882) and educator. Short autograph letter signed and dated in 1879, sending an autograph to a fan. 1 page, size is 4.3 x 7 inches, folds, in excellent condition.

American novelist and journalist (1900-1949), whose only novel written was "Gone with the Wind" for which she was awarded a Pulitzer prize in 1937. Album page signed by her dated in Atlanta, on October 11, 1936, attached with a photograph of her (probably a clip from a program or magazine). Size is 4.3 x 5.75 inches, in good condition.

American novelist and journalist (1900-1949), author of the famous novel "Gone with the Wind", winner of Pulitzer prize in 1937.  Typed letter signed by her with her full married name (in the letterhead), discussing with her publisher about rights and edition of the novel.  Size is 8.5 x 11 inches, 1 page, light damage on edges, 2 folds, otherwise in very good condition. Very important document, unique as one of the America's greatest writers.

Chilean poet, diplomat and politician (1904-1973), winner of the 1971 Nobel Prize in Literature. Signed book "Tercera Residencia", inscribed to someone thanking her visit and books, dated in Isla Negra (Chile) in 1964, with a small drawing by him.  Tercera Residencia is a book of poetry, 112 pages, this is the 2nd edition (1951), Editorial Losada, Buenos Aires, soft covers, 6 x 8 inches. Neruda signs it on the first page. Original dust jacket and book are both in excellent condition. See scans of autograph page, front cover and title page.

German philosopher (1844-1900), critic and philologist, who had a wide and deep impact on modern intellectual history.  Rare autographed album page, signed during his famous stay in Italy in 1876-77. Trying to recover from his health problems, Nietzsche took a long vacation/work time in Sorrento, in Southern Italy, from late October 1876 through early May 1877. He was not alone, 3 friends were sharing the same rented house, called Villa Rubinacci: his close friend, German writer and physician Paul Rée (1849-1901), his friend the German writer Malwida von Meysenburg (1816-1903), and young law student and aspirant novelist Albert Brenner. This long stay in Italy included reading and discussions on Philosophy with his friends, resting and walking, touring, and of course, writing works. It was during this very important period in Italy that Nietzsche started writing the content for his book "Human All Too Human", which would be published in 1879. Album page handwritten and signed by him, "Treulich der Ihre" (faithfully from your), full signature Friedrich Nietzsche, dated by him in Villa Rubinacci in February 1877. Size is 6.9 x 3.4 inches, irregular top border since this page was taken from an album, minor rust stains, in overall very good condition. Autographs of Friedrich Nietzsche are extremely rare and highly desirable, so this is a great chance to get one, from a very important period in his life, at a bargain price.

Austrian poet (1819-1904). Manuscript poem in German for famous Austrian ballerina Fanny Elssler (1810-1884) signed below by the poet himself.  Size is 5.7 x 8.8 inches, 2 written pages in one sheet, folds, minor stains, in overall very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is a transcription in German and a translation into English.

British writer (b.1965) and philanthropist, best known for writing the Harry Potter fantasy series, which has won multiple awards and sold more than 500 million copies. Fine color photograph signed by her, shown promoting one of her books.  Size is 10.7 x 8.1 inches, authentication sticker on verso, in excellent condition.

British philosopher (1872-1970), historian, writer, social and political activist, and Nobel Prize of Literature laureate. Nice signed photograph, size is 4 x 5.9 inches, stamped on verso by Keystone Press Agency Ltd., London, in excellent condition.

French philosopher, novelist (1905-1980), critic and political activist. Signed program for a performance of "Keane" at The Kings theater based on Dumas' novel adapted by Sartre for theatre (1953). Sartre signs on his picture, inscribed on page 3. Program was also signed by director Pierre Brasseur on his photo and also by actors Roger Pigaut and actress Claude Gensac. Full program with all his pages and covers. Size is 5.25 x 7.1 inches, in very good condition.

French writer (1783-1842), one of the best in his country in the first half of the 19th century, best known for his novels The Red and the Black (1830), and The Charterhouse of Parma (1839). His real name was Marie-Henri Beyle. Autograph note signed, in French, dated by him in 1809, about an appointment. Sold with translation and transcription. Size is 6 x 4.1 inches, in excellent condition.

Famous Argentinian poet of the modernist period (1892-1938). A very relevant voice among Latin American poets, Storni died young by committing suicide (walked into the sea and drowned).  Handwritten poem, signed by her, entitled "Faro en la Noche" (Lighthouse in the Night), in Spanish, dated by her in Buenos Aires in 1934. Also included is the first edition of her book "Mundo de Siete Pozos" (A World of Seven Pits), Editorial Tor, Buenos Aires, 1934 - where this poem was published for the first time.  Poem is one page, 4.5 x 7.1 inches, in excellent condition, book has 160 pages, hard covers (not original), 5 x 7.1 inches, ownership marks on title page, in very good condition. Rare!

French statesman and historian (1797-1877), second elected President of France and first President of the French Third Republic. Large signed photograph (21 x 27.25 inches !), also hand signed by famous photographer Leon Bonnat (1833-1922) - his portraits of Victor Hugo and Louis Adolphe Thiers are among his most famous works. The actual photo print is in excellent condition, original photographer mat has minor loss of paper on corners, overall aging coloration and some stains, but is still in very good condition. Fantastic album that belonged to the English palaeographer and amateur historian Emma Elizabeth Thoyts (1860-1949) with many autograph letters and clips signed by different personalities of the Victorian era including Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert, King Henry IV, King William IV, Princess Christiane (Queen Victoria's daughter), Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli and many other personalities of the United Kingdom. Album has a larger number of items (for a more complete list of the items identified please give a look at the last scans provided) and it is signed by Mrs. Thoyts on the back of the front cover, dated 1875.  Album's size is 9.8 x 11.75 inches, in very good condition.

American artist (1928-1987), film director, and producer; and American novelist (1924-1984), screenwriter, playwright, and actor. Magazine "Interview" (issued in 1979) signed on the cover by Andy Warhol and Truman Capote with a black felt tip pen. The magazine includes interviews with both artists plus Debbie Harry (cover photo).   Size is 11 x 16.7 inches, full magazine will all pages, authentication sticker on the back cover, minor cracks, overall rust toning, in very good condition. Rare!

Irish-born poet (1854-1900), playwright, and author, who became one of the most popular playwrights in London in the early 1890s. Signature cut of the poet attached to a piece of paper to a larger album page.  Total size is 6.6 x 8.1 inches (signature on the strip of paper is 2.5 inches wide), in very good condition. Autographs of Oscar Wilde are extremely rare to find and highly collectible.
