Roxy Symphony Orchestra - Large Photograph 1930

Item #: H1971-GX269B

The Roxy Symphony Orchestra was a large, popular orchestra in the 1930s and 40s, and belonged to the Roxy Theater (founded in 1927, demolished in 1960). It had famous radio broadcasts - Millions of people enjoyed them every Sunday.

With 110 musicians, it was the largest permanent symphony orchestra, even surpassing the NY Philharmonic.

Estonian-born conductor Erno Rapee (1891-1945) was its founder and Music Director, and can be seen at the podium in this magnificent original photograph, dated in white ink by photographer on the lower left corner on August 2nd, 1930.

Photo is mounted on hard cardboard, and has a loose blue mat on top that can be easily removed, to a total size of 16 x 12.6 inches. Photo is 13.1 x 9.6 inches (visible window size, actual photo is a bit larger). Mounting traces on photograph, hidden by the mat, minor scratches, but in overall very good condition.
