In the heart of Catania's historic center, facing the church of San Francesco d'Assisi, stands a modest first-floor apartment in the Palazzo Gravina Cruyllas. This unassuming residence holds outsized significance for music lovers: it is the birthplace of Vincenzo Bellini, the composer of Norma and La Sonnambula, who was born there on November 3, 1801, and spent the first sixteen years of his life within its walls. Today the building houses the Museo Vincenzo Bellini, long known simply as the Museo Belliniano.

The museum's origins trace back to 1919, when a committee formed under the Real Circolo Bellini di Catania began raising funds to transform the composer's childhood home into a permanent memorial. The campaign drew support from figures across Italian society, and in 1923 a royal decree formally declared the house a national monument. After years of preparatory work, the museum finally opened its doors on May 5, 1930, in a ceremony attended by King Vittorio Emanuele III. For nearly two decades starting in 1950, it was directed by Francesco Pastura, a scholar whose biography of the composer remains a reference work for Bellini studies.

Spread across three rooms and two smaller spaces, the collection is arranged chronologically, tracing Bellini's journey from his Catania youth through his training in Naples and his professional life in Milan, Venice, London, and Paris. Visitors encounter original scores, letters, portraits, family furnishings, and personal effects, alongside the composer's death mask and items connected to the 1876 repatriation of his remains from France to Sicily. Notable pieces include a bust of the composer, stage models representing his ten operas, and mementos linked to singers and collaborators who shaped his career.

In March 2023, the site expanded its offerings with the inauguration of a multimedia museum, an immersive digital space adjacent to the historic rooms. Titled "Una vita in quattro atti" ("A Life in Four Acts"), this addition uses contemporary exhibition technology to guide visitors through the same biographical arc, from the Sicilian upbringing of Bellini to his final years abroad.

Beyond its exhibits, the museum functions as a research resource, offering guided tours, archival access, and a music library holding scores by Italian and international composers spanning the eighteenth through twentieth centuries. Together, the birth house and its modern counterpart preserve both the intimate details of Bellini's life and his lasting place in operatic history.
