The New York Philharmonic received this note from t Albert Einstein two years after he immigrated to the US to avoid Nazism in Germany. He requested the Philharmonic perform an arrangement of J.S. Bach's The Art of the Fugue by German conductor Georg Darmstadt. Einstein was a music lover and known to attend Philharmonic concerts on occasion. The Philharmonic was able to program this piece for its New York Premiere in 1940, coincidentally the same year Einstein gained American citizenship.
