Literature Autographs

French playwright (1854-1913) and songwriter. Partly-printed document signed by him, dated in Paris, May 18, 1885, by which he gives his approval for the performance of his one-act comedy "Oscar Bourdoche" (1884) at the Théâtre de la Renaissance.  Size is 8.2 x 10.5 inches, evident folds, creases, overall rust tone, otherwise in very good condition.

American author (1872-1939). Black-and-white half-tone photograph signed by him. Size is 3.4 x 5.75 inches, in excellent condition.

American novelist (b.1955), politician and actor, best known for his popular legal thrillers. Card signed by him. Size is 5 x 3 inches, in excellent condition. ALSO INCLUDED are two unsigned photographs: one a promo movie-still photograph of the film The Rainmaker (1997) based in one of his novels; and the other, a half-tone photo of him.

Austrian musicologist (1886-1960), who worked on behalf of the International Bruckner Society to the complete edition of Anton Bruckner’s symphonies and Masses. Autograph note in German signed by him, dated 1924, informing the schedule of the Music Department and the best time to request orientation. Size is 2.8 x 1.8 inches, no translation included, printed letterhead of the National Library, folds, in very good condition.

French dramatist (1802-1883), journalist, historian, and civil servant. Autograph letter in French (untranslated) signed by him, dated January 23, 1879, where he addresses a gentleman: “…vous voulez bien m’informer qu’une société dite des jeunes auteurs  vient de se constituer par la formation d’un Comité provisoire, composé de M. M. Fr. Coppée, Alfred des Essarts, Germain Picard, Gallion, Georges Berry…”.  Size is 5.4 x 8.3 inches, 1 written page, light folds and creases, in overall very good condition.  

American writer (1921-1992), and author of the famous novel "Roots" (1976), later adapted as a TV miniseries. First-day cover commemorating the emancipation in 1963 signed by him. Size is 6.5 x 3.7 inches, in very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is a short note with his signature.

British writer (1857-1939) and Women's Rights advocate. Short typed note signed by her and dated 1937, sending an autograph to a fan. Size is 6.8 x 4.5 inches, in very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is a small 4-page prospect about her work.

American journalist and writer (1864-1912), who assisted the political career of Theodor Roosevelt. Small clip (probably the bottom of a letter) mounted on a larger piece of paper with his signature. Total size is 5.4 x 4 inches, in very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is a piece of paper with the signature of his mother Rebecca dated July 10, 1902, who was also an author and journalist (1831-1910). Size is 4.7 x 6.5 inches, in excellent condition.

German dramatist and novelist (1862-1946), one of the most important promoters of literary naturalism, received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1912.  Signed photo postcard, 3.5 x 5.5 inches, in very good condition.

French poet (1856-1937), singer, journalist, music teacher, and musicologist. Typed letter signed by him with short autograph line at the end, dated December 1927, to the composer Adriano Lualdi [Inaldi, sic.]: “…Peut-être la publication du Répertoire Moderne de Vocalises-Etudes, commencée il y a plusieurs années sur mon initiative, est-elle tombée sous vos yeux?…”.  Size is 7.6 x 9.3 inches, 2 typed pages in one sheet (front and back), central fold and creases, irregularly cut bottom border, with letterhead, in overall very good condition.

German writer and translator (1830-1914), winner of the Nobel Prize of Literature in 1910. Signed photo postcard, size is 3.4 x 5.4 inches, minor stains, otherwise in very good condition.

English writer (1864-1950), and also journalist and music critic. Autograph letter signed by him, dated in Tormina (Sicily), on March 14th, 1912. Size is 5.5 x 8.4 inches, 1 page, folds, envelope included, in very good condition.

American novelist (1819-1881). Autograph letter in English signed by him, dated August 21, 1874, about personal matters. Size is 5 x 8 inches, 1 page, ink partially faded but still visible, otherwise in very good condition.

American poet and physician (1809-1894). Piece of paper with his signature. Size is 2.8 x 1.6 inches, in very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is an unsigned carte-de-visite CDV of him by photographer Black & Case (Boston). Size is 2.4 x 3.9 inches, in excellent condition.

American realist novelist (1837-1920), literary critic, and playwright, nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters". His signature on a card. Size is 5.1 x 3.25 inches, in excellent condition.

American novelist (1872-1956), film director, military officer, and composer. An original envelope attached with a sticker signed and inscribed by him with a short sentiment (postal markings indicated the year 1936). Size is 5.3 x 3.3 inches, in very good condition. English historical novelist (1889-1967), and also a factual biographer of Sir Walter Raleigh. Autograph letter signed by her, no year indicated. Size is 4.4 x 6.8 inches, 1 page, central fold, in excellent condition.

German music writer (1813-1869) best known for his 1856 biography of Mozart. Autograph letter signed, written in Bonn, dated in 1868. 1 page, written in German, sold untranslated. Size is 5.5 x 7.5 inches, small stain at bottom of page far from text and signature, otherwise vintage item in excellent condition.

French vaudevillist and librettist (1825-1901). Autograph letter in French (sold untranslated) signed by him and dated in 1891(?), addressed to presumably Director Hilarion Ballande. Size is 4 x 5.2 inches, 2 written pages in one sheet.

Canadian-American TV journalist (1938-2005), best known as "the sole anchor of ABC World News Tonight". Fine black-and-white photograph signed and inscribed by him with a short sentiment, shown young. Size is 7 x 8.9 inches, in excellent condition.

Russian literature scholar (1924-2009), who lived most of his life in the USA; an expert in Russian and Slavonic literature. Typed letter in English signed by him addressed to the American composer Lucas Foss, about music matters. Size is 7.9 x 10.5 inches, 1 page, in excellent condition.

British writer (1880-1946). Black-and-white photo postcard signed by him in 1917. Size is 3.5 x 5.5 inches, some writing on verso by another hand, in excellent condition.

American author (1899-1989). Black-and-white photograph signed by her. Size is 3.5 x 5 inches, in excellent condition.

American author (b.1947) of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, crime, science-fiction, and fantasy novels.  Fine casual color photograph signed by him, shown young. Size is 9.8 x 7.9 inches, in excellent condition.

German historian (1822-1903), better known for his book about the fall of the house of the Stuart. Set of 2 autograph letters in French (sold untranslated) signed by him, dated in 1864. One of the letters is 2-pages and the other is 4-pages, each page's size is 5.75 x 9 inches approximately, folds, minor stains, in very good condition.

English playwright (1916-2002) and screenwriter, mostly known for his crime-related works. Dial M for Murder is probably his most famous plot, and was taken to film by Alfred Hitchcock. Signed program for a performance of this play in theater, at the Nassau Repertory Theater, Nov-Dec, 1964. Signed and inscribed on the first page by Knott, who inscribed his autograph to Craig Dudley, one of the actors in the play.  Autograph is on the first page of the program, which has been separated and mounted on a cardboard mat, next to the front cover. This is not a full program, only the cast page and the front cover. Mat is 12.75 x 11.25 inches, in excellent condition.

American musical critic and author (1857-1918), best known for his guide to the operas, "The Complete Opera Book" first published in the United States in 1919 and the United Kingdom in 1922. Autograph letter signed, 5 pages, dated in March 1918, size of each page is 8 x 9.75 inches, small tear on left side of final page, otherwise in very good condition. 

Russian ballet historian (1915-1999) and critic, highly respected for her books and articles.  Beautiful photograph shown at home signed and inscribed by her with a short sentiment.  Size is 5.25 x 3.2 inches, in excellent condition.

French music critic (1866-1943), translator and son of composer Eduard Laló (1823-1892). Autograph note signed by him on a card. Size is 5 x 3.5 inches, in excellent condition.

French playwright (1761-1833) whose works played an important role against the mob rule during the French Revolution. Fine autograph letter in French signed by him (untranslated), no year indicated. Size is 4.5 x 7.25 inches, 1 written page, in very good condition.

French poet (1851-1915). Autograph poem in French in two separate pages signed by Legay on the second page, and inscribed to the French baritone Leon Melchissedec. Size is 7.1 x 9 inches each page, central fold, minor spotted dust, in overall very good condition.

French writer (1807-1903), dramatist, and women's rights activist. Set of two autograph letters signed by him (no date). One of them addressed to the French physician and poet Théophile Coupier (1820-1872), and the other, to a gentleman, thanking him for his appreciation.  Sizes are 5.1 x 8 inches and 5.2 x 8 inches, overall rust tone, in very good condition. American Lawyer and writer (1861 – 1927), best known for his short story "Madame Butterfly", which inspired Puccini's opera of the same name. Signature cut mounted on album page which also contains an unsigned portrait etching. Signature cut is 2.75 x 4.75 inches, total item is sized at 5 x 9 inches, attractive vintage item in excellent condition. 

Swiss dramatist (1873-1921), son of the founder of the Gallican church movement Charles "père" Loyson. Set of four autograph letters signed by him, written in French and Italian, dated three of them in 1907, about different topics and addressed to different people.
