Unsigned Opera Photos

Group of 75 unsigned photos, mostly 7 x 9 inches, mostly depicting singers in role, from Teatro La Scala. Most are from the 1950s to the 1970s, some older, many are photos by official photographer Erio Piccagliani, many stamped on verso. Many famous names, all in very good condition. Not sold individually, only as lot. All are in excellent condition. 

Group of 50 unsigned photo postcards from Teatro La Scala, Milan, Italy, showing singers in role, from late 1930s through early 1970s. Each one is 4.1 x 5.9 inches, most are not stamped on verso by photographer, a few are stamped on verso by a photographer, all in very good condition.

German soprano (1888-1976), American bass-baritone (1920-1985), and German-born conductor (1876-1962). Gorgeous black and white unsigned photograph of the three artists in an informal pose; an original photo by Brüder Basch, Vienna, ink-stamped on verso by him (sticker indicating date Nov. 2nd, 1955). Size is 5.1 x 7.1 inches, creases over the upper and lower left corners, otherwise in excellent condition.

German-American soprano (1888-1976). Lot of 19 unsigned photos, mostly shown as herself (few photos in role), various sizes being largest 3.75 x 5.6 inches, all in excellent condition.

A wonderful collection of 40 unsigned photo postcards of opera singers at the Leipzig Opera from the period 1900-1950. Size is 3.5 x 5.4 inches each on average, some with signs of silvering, in overall excellent condition. SOLD ONLY AS A LOT, NOT SOLD SEPARATELY.

French tenor (1844-1937) who was most famous for creating the role of Don Jose in Bizet's Carmen (1875). A very nice and original black-and-white photograph of the Birthday 90th of the tenor in April 1934 surrounded by other known singers and personalities; ink-stamped on verso by photographer (illegible). Size is 9 x 6.7 inches, in good condition (see scan provided).

Russian-born French soprano (1860-1936). A fine collection of 10 unsigned black-and-white photo postcards of the soprano, depicted in different operatic roles such as Armide, Isolde, Brunhilde, and two as herself. Size is 3.4 x 5.4 inches each, all in excellent condition. SOLD ONLY AS A LOT, NOT SOLD SEPARATELY.

Russian-born French soprano (1860-1936), unsigned photo in role (probably as Isolde), blind stamped on 1913 and attached to a slightly larger piece of cardboard. Size is 5 x 7.65 inches, in excellent condition.

Group of 20 unsigned photos mostly depicting singers in role, from Lyric Opera of Chicago. Most are from the 1950s and 60s, all stamped on verso by official photographer Nancy Sorensen. Among  the many famous artists included are Giuseppe Di Stefano, Jean Madeira,Tito Gobbi, Renata Tebaldi, Giuletta Simionato, Birgit Nilsson, Jon Vickers, and Boris Christoff. All photos are 8 x 10 inches, in excellent condition. Not sold individually.

Italian tenor (1844-1926), who had a fantastic international career, focused mostly in Russia where he sang 16 seasons in Moscow and 27 in St. Petersburg, including a large repertoire. Large cabinet photograph with his name written below by another handy, shown young. Size is 12.25 x 16.4 inches, spotted rust stains, mounting and minor damage traces on verso, otherwise in excellent condition.

Original large on stage Erio Piccagliani photo. Size is 8.75 x 12 inches. This is a modern copy, high quality, made in the early 1990s (not vintage from the 50s and 60s).

Group of 17 unsigned photos mostly taken at the Metropolitan Opera in New York between the 1930s to the 1990s. Includes many leading artists shown both as themselves and in role, among them are Maria Callas, Lawrence Tibbett, Luciano Pavarotti, and Placido Domingo. All are 8 x 10 inches, in excellent condition, sold only as lot.

Set of 2 original glass negatives for photographs of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. One is from the period 1905-1910 during the construction of scenery at the stage, the second is a shot taken outside with people waiting, taking during the 1910s. Each one is on glass, 7 x 5 inches, with very minor damage on borders, in excellent condition. Fragile.

Original wire photo taken on Oct 28th, 1958, opening night at the Met Opera in New York, with Dimitri Mitropoulos conducting Eugene Onegin. Mitropoulos can be seen over the lower right with the baton, in facing the orchestra. Original photo from the archives of The Baltimore Sun, a certificate of authenticity is included, 8 x 10 inches, stamped on verso by Associated Press, dated the next day.

German opera singer (1877-1952), considered one of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos of the early 20th century, appearing in every opera house throughout Europe.
