Italian mezzo-soprano (1821-1896) known for her fine voice, secure technique, and strong temperament. Autograph letter in Italian signed by her, dated in Milan, 1888, to the Chapel master of S. Gaudenzio in Novara, concerning the possibility of hosting a young singer: “…con me non avrebbe il fitto del pianoforte essendo in casa, e potrebbe studiare nelle ore dalla mattina alle 10 e alla sera…” Size is 4.4 x 7 inches, 3 written pages in one folded sheet, central fold, overall rust stains, in overall good condition.  Original envelope is INCLUDED.

Legendary German soprano and later voice teacher (1888-1976), who had an important international career mostly associated with the German repertoire.  Original telegram sent by her to Italian superstar conductor Arturo Toscanini, dated April 9, 1955. Size is 7.9 x 5.6 inches, crack over the left border, creases, folds, some dust stains, in good condition.

American impresario, a member of the Board of Directors of the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Typed letter signed by him, dated April 15, 1935, to Arturo Toscanini, concerning the journalist Adolph Ochs, owner of the New York Times: “…Here is an excerpt from the obituary notice of Adolph Ochs, printed in the New York Times of April 9th. I regard it as the expression of an impression which most men have, but which most men have been unable to express as Mr. Ochs has done…”. Size is 5.8 x 7.9 inches, 2 typed pages in one sheet (front and back), central fold, with letterhead, in excellent condition.

Italian conductor (1858-1941), especially of opera, whose most famous work was done in 1890-1920, both in Europe and South America. Autograph letter in Italian signed by him, dated in Pisa,1897, to a friend:  "... Yesterday evening I returned from Venice, where I attended the premiere of Nemea by [Ernesto] Coop, our dear friend, and I can assure you that the success was splendid. Yesterday I passed through Florence, where I found your dear letter – I am writing at once to Ferdinando on the subject – he hoped that through you we could have the internal place for Arturo – I am sure that you will have done everything in your power to favor me, so let it be from this moment on that I am obliged to pay with you the seven and fifty lire per month that are necessary (if in doing this you will see that it will be possible to profit by and I thank you sincerely for the great kindness shown to me on this and other occasions..." Typed letter in English signed by him, dated August 16, 1934, to Arturo Toscanini: “…I see by an announcement made in the London newspapers today that you have agreed to conduct two concerts for the British Broadcasting Corporation in May of next year, and I am wondering whether it would be possible for you to also conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra if I am able to bring it to London at about the same time…”.  Size is 7.9 x 9.9 inches, 2 typed pages in one sheet (front and back), with letterhead, central fold, staple holes at the upper-left corner, in overall very good condition.

American conductor (1861-1933), violinist, and composer, who formed the Los Angeles Women's Orchestra in 1893 and the Los Angeles Symphony in 1897. Fine autograph letter signed by him, dated in Los Angeles, December 18, 1900, to the Italian violinist Achille Simonetti (1857-1928): “…Since I returned to America over four years ago, I have been doing more in the way of conducting and seem to have found that my forte lies more in that direction than in violin playing alone. (…) As soon as I arrived here from London my old position as chef d’orchestre in the principal theatre in this city, was offered to me, and I have kept it ever since…”. German violinist (1852-1926), teacher, and composer. Gorgeous cabinet photo signed and inscribed by him and dated 1895, adding a beautiful 5-bar music quote over the top; a photograph by H. Boock (Hamburg). Size is 4.2 x 6.4 inches, some rust stains over the left border, in overall very good condition.

French baritone (1918-2004), regarded as one of the very finest interpreters of French art songs. Autograph note in French signed by him, dated probably in 1954, on Lydia Fournier's Guests Book. Size is 4.5 x 6.7 inches, 1 pages, overall rust tone, in very good condition.

Autograph letter in German, signed by him, dated 10/I/1909, to a colleague about music matters. Size is 5.5 x 8.6 inches, 1 page, central fold, with letterhead, in overall very good condition. German conductor (1879-1961), theologian, and musicologist. Typed letter in German signed by him, dated July 21, 1939, stating: “Due to an overabundance of work and unfortunately also due to a prolonged illness, I only have time today, after the end of the semester, to thank you once again for the gracious welcome we received from you at our concert in Florence. It was a great pleasure for all of us to experience the open-mindedness with which the students of your famous institute received the performances of our chamber orchestra, and we will always remember the beautiful evening with you with gratitude. I hope that one day I will also have the pleasure of welcoming you to Berlin with some of your master's students. At the same time, I would like to take the liberty of sending you our last two annual reports, which should give you an insight into our work…”.  Size is 8.2 x 11.2 inches, 1 page, central fold, overal rust, creases, in overall very good condition.

English music critic and musicologist (1868-1959). Set of two autograph letters signed by him, as follows: A. Dated 13/VI/1937, to Arturo Toscanini, concerning music transcriptions: “…The score “L’Incoronazione” only arrived last night (…) As soon as I get a free afternoon I will go through [Giacomo] Benvenuti’s transcription, comparing it with the original. I heard the work about fifteen years ago at Oxford, where it was quite well performed by amateurs, in a transcription by a young scholar, J.[ack]. A.[llan] Westrup [1904-1975], who is now at the “Daily Telegraph”. This transcription has never been published however. By all accounts, at Florence the other evening they made a “grand opera” à la “Aida” of it!…”. French composer (1822-1884) of sacred music, and director of singing at Notre-Dame between 1876-1884. A very important autograph letter in French signed by him, dated in Paris, April 8, 1872, to a collegue, mentioning a trial regarding the widow of the composer Gioacchino Rossini, Olympe Pélissier, and unpublished works by the composer: “…Je ne pouvais rien vous écrire avant de connaître l’issue du procès de Madame Rossini. Aujourd’hui, j’apprends qu’elle vient de le perdre (…) Avez vous réussi à trouver un nombre de souscriptions suffisant pour l’acquisition des oeuvres inédites de Rossini (…) Aussi me suis-je sincerement réjoui lorsque en ma présence Madame Rossini a pris l’engagement de vous les vendre en toute propriété…”. Polish violinist (1882-1947), known for his individualistic interpretations and praised for his tone color, expressiveness, and flexibility. Very fine autograph letter in German signed by him, dated July 14, 1917, to composer Eugen d’Albert, concerning the organization of a tour of concerts. Size is 5.6 x 8.9 inches, 4 written pages, with letterhead, storage holes, creases, some smudges, folds, in overall very good condition. Partial translation: “… Based on your letter of June 9, which I received yesterday, I had a conversation today with the concert director Wolff-Sachs to include the 3 Polish concerts in the sonata tour. It turned out that this is hardly feasible if you do not give us 2 days in February for the 2 Munich sonata evenings, which Sachs wants to give within the 10 concerts he has taken over. I want to spare you with the individual dates and hall commissions in this matter and share only the result. Provided that it will be possible for you to schedule the 2 Munich Sonata evenings earlier, I propose the following data plan to you…”.

German Writer (1889-1969). Autograph letter in French signed by her, dated in Munich, 1924, to Arturo Toscanini, who desired an autograph letter by Richard Wagner: "... Countess Blandine Gravina, who came to see me on the way, told me of your desire to have an autograph of Richard Wagner. A happy coincidence gives me the opportunity to send you one; it is a letter from Wagner to Malwina von Meÿsenberg, the great friend of the Wagner family, the author of the famous "Memoirs of an Idealist (...) The enclosed letter is an invitation from Wagner to the "Mastersinger" in Munich 1868...". Each page's size is 5.6 x 8.7 inches, 4 written pages, in very good condition. Envelope is INCLUDED.

Russian composer (1798-1870), best known for the composition of the Imperial Russian National Anthem, and the opera "Undine" (1846). Autograph note in French signed by him, to Thomas Heidenrech: "Liszt, with his concert two evenings, my dear Mr. Heidenrech, will be a hindrance to our trio, which he will be pleased to postpone until another day of the week when you are free..." Open size is 10.5 x 6.7 inches, some ink markings, folds, water stains at the bottom, in overall good condition.

Dutch composer and arranger (1868-1954) who, in 1913, was one of the founders and first director of "The Music-Copyright Office" (BUMA). Typed letter in German, signed by him and dated in Amsterdam on 21st September 1936 to Maestro Arturo Toscanini, concerning the foundations of his music theory, Size is 8.5 x 13.8 inches, 2 typed pages in one sheet (front and back), creases, folds, with letterhead, some autograph corrections in ink, in overall very good condition. Translation: “…You don't know me, I got to know you as an artist, and I mean that I learned through that. If you don't have time or too little time for it, just don't read this letter. In the opposite case, read until the matter no longer interests you enough. I believe that presenting things in the simplest form has always been the best way to make one's thoughts clear to others. Especially the modern man is ashamed - why he hardly knows himself - to use this method. And so it is with many a modern composer. For me, the comprehensible musical culture does not go much further than Wagner. In this century, a new element has infiltrated musical culture, which actually cannot be a positive element in the musical sense. Until so far in musical art after good musical education it was possible to get to know a work and to understand it musically (and to love it!). Whether one calls certain modern music atonal, bitonal or pluritonal does not matter. The question is: is it possible to feel this music musically at all? If a composer with talent would dare today to compose and then perform a work that is musically comprehensible like the works of the 19th century, and suppose that this work is even a work of art, this composer would probably be laughed at these days. Snobisme has always existed. Snobisme is as necessary as bacterial colonies in the human body. Snobisme and criticism have in and of themselves no artistic form, they are however indispensable in musical society, because the development of the young creative musician will not flourish if the process of development is too smooth. The more this process is hindered, the more he learns to understand that he can only become an artist through long and diligent study. In art there is an analogue for what in nature is called biological effect. I will assume this with an example. In the beginning there must be the belief, thank God, that this time still believes in Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi, Wagner and the good that the other excellent composers have left us. The present listeners, who are not musically educated in the sphere of the 19th century, are nevertheless able to enjoy this beautiful art, although they are not aware that the key point in the development of this artistic enjoyment is faith…”. 2 pp. In-4.

Description of Abraham Loman’s music theory (“Einiges der Lomanschen Theorie”) with Graphic image of the root tones in the key of D (“Graphisches Bild der Stammtöne in der Tonsorte D”).
