German tenor (1845-1905). Vintage carte-de-visite (CDV) of him by photographer Wilhelm Höffert (Dresden, Leipzig and Carlsruhe). Size is 2.4 x 4.1 inches, spotted rust, in overall very good condition (see scans provided).

Italian pianist (1839-1914), composer, and conductor, a pupil of Sigismund Thalberg in Naples Nice vintage photograph mounted on red cardboard with facsimile autograph dated London, Sept. 23, 1885. Size is 4.25 x 6.25 inches, in very good condition.

German composer (1763-1845), chapel master at the Cathedral of Bergamo. Vintage lithograph of him by Filippo Caporali. Size is 8.25 x 11.5 inches approx., spotted rust, rust stains, in good condition (see scan provided).

Australian-French tenor (1925-2013). Set of 2 Autograph Letters in French (sold untranslated), signed by him, dated 1963 and 1967. Sizes are 5.25 x 8.25 inches and 8.26 x 10.6 inches, both in excellent condition.

French composer (1876-1943) who perished tragically during a bombing in France during World War II. Autograph letter in French signed by him and dated April  4, 1903, to an unidentified gentleman saying that he may forward two letters for him. Laparra will win the Grand Prix de Rome in November for music composition with his Ulysse. Size is 4.4 x 6.9 inches, 1 page, folds, overall rust tone, in very good condition.

German composer and theater conductor (1866-1946), considered the "father" of the Berlin operetta. Fine black-and-white photo postcard signed by him with a short sentiment dated 1941; photo by Emil Bieber (Berlin). Size is 3.5 x 5.5 inches, in very good condition.

Berlin, Nov. 26, 1936, to Wilhelm Rode the famous bass and artistic director of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin: “...I would like to thank you once again in this way for your kind remembrance on the occasion of my 70th birthday. The warm, sincere tone in which you have clothed your beautiful words has touched me deeply and that you have so much love for the great art, for one of the small art, is a wonderful sign of your humanity and kindness. Your dear memory as a Dutchman will always have a place of honor in my home...”. 1 page, In-4. With the composer’s embossed letterhead. Archive holes. B. Berlin, Jan. 17, 1937, to Wilhelm Rode (1887-1959): “...Thank you very much for sending the New Year's Eve picture, which is excellent and will be a lovely reminder of you and the successful evening. I thank you, especially for the kind reception in your house; I would have stolen the flowers, but they were firmly attached with wire, - as a precaution - but composers do not steal flowers!...”. 1 page, in-4. Program signed by the American pianist on the cover for a his performance with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in Syracuse, NY on April 4th (no year), under the baton of Erich Leinsdorf.  Size is 5.4 x 8.4 inches, 11 pages, in excellent condition.

Program signed by the pianist on the cover for a performance of works by Gershwin, Beethoven, Kern, and Mendelssohn at the  Westchester County Center with the Cleveland Orchestra under Artur Rodzinski on February 6, 1942. Size is 6.7 x 9.4 inches, 15 pages, in excellent condition. 

Estonian-born American composer and teacher (1903-1976). Autograph letter in English signed by him, dated July 11, 1944, to the Hungarian pianist and composer Ernö Balogh (1897-1989): «...Although we are in the country we think with envy of your air-conditioned apartment (...) You will be pleased to know that both business transactions which you so kindly sponsored are brought to a successful end. Both little pieces go to DELKAS and I went to ASCAP. Besides, I am engaged on my latest business, the concertino, which is progressing slowly but steadily...». Size is 7.8 x 9.8 inches, 2 written pages in one sheet (front and back), folds, otherwise in excellent condition.

American songwriter (1879-1959), singer, and vaudeville performer. Typed letter signed by him dated March 4, 1944, to film director and producer Joseph Kane (1894-1975): «...I gave a show for P.G. Smith and his Marines. A lot of laughs (...) I said "I don't think you did much singing when you were in Vaudeville (...) I got the damnedest kick out on one thing in the Harvest Moon Picture, it did sound so funny hearing my name coming out on the screen all the time, and when some character said "Now Look here Jack Norworth, you can't do that" (...) I felt like talking back and saying who the hell says I can't (...) I wrote Dennis Morgan a letter and that (...) thanks to him, I'm very proud of me...». The 1944 film Shine on Harvest Moon, starring Ann Sheridan and Dennis Morgan, was one of the big musical hits of the WWII era. Size is 8.4 x 10,8 inches, 2 written pages in one sheet (front and verso), three horizontal folds, overall rust tone, in very good condition.

American tenor (1888-1969). Large-size sepia photograph of the tenor by Fred Hartsook signed by Marsh with a short sentiment; here shown in his famous role of Prince Karl Franz in Sigmund Romberg’s four acts operetta “The Student Prince” (1924). Size is 7.4 x 9.2 inches, mounted on cardboard, in overall excellent condition.

British violinist (1906-1987). Autograph Note in English signed by him on a postcard with his letterhead, dated Aug.  28, 1968, to Ms. Carla Hinrichsen, thanking her for their meeting and waiting “...a letter from you as promised & details of compositions left...”. Size is 5.4 x 3.3 inches, in excellent condition.

English composer and conductor (1822-1896). Autograph letter in English signed by him, dated Oct. 11, 1880, to the editor of “The Girls’ Own Paper”: «...Herewith I enclose my article on part-singing and shall be obliged by seeing a proof before it is issued. I shall be here all this week, and will return it on the day I receive it...». Size is 3.9 x 5.9 inches, 1 page, printed letterhead, some rust stains over upper-left corner, some creases at the bottom, in overall very good condition (see scan provided).

Scottish pianist (1868-1948) and composer, a pupil of Franz Liszt. Pink album page signed by him with a short sentiment dated September 19, 1930. Size is 4.9 x 6.1 inches, in overall excellent condition.

German tenor (1835-1902), renowned for his performances of Wagnerian roles. Vintage carte-de-visite (CDV) of the tenor by photographer T. Eulenstein (Leipzig). Size is 2.4 x 4 inches, some spotted rust, in very good condition.

American composer (1893-1969), author of the opera "The Ballad of Baby Doe". Typed letter in English signed by him, dated January 31, 1944, to fellow composer John Edmonds: «...We forwarded to you last week the salvaged volume of your songs. Madame [Maria] Maximovitch [Russian soprano] thinks you are very unwise to take it away from her (...) However I gave her the "Faucon" (...) I think you have one of the finest gifts of songwriting that I have ever encountered and I think you will not only gain in confidence but will have tremendous success as the songs are gradually discovered...». Size is 8 x 10.3 inches, 1 page, Columbia University letterhead, folds, rust stains, creases, in overall very good condition.

Austrian dancer (1850-1892), prima ballerina of the Vienna Court Opera, and second wife of Historian Hans Makart. Fine vintage carte-de-visite (CDV) of her by photographer Julius Cornelius Schaarwächter (Berlin). Size is 2.5 x 4.1 inches, ink-writing on verso, otherwise in excellent condition.

Austrian composer (1867-1935). Autograph note in German signed by him, no date, to a friend, making arrangements for a meeting with Georg Billner. Size is 7 x 8.5 inches, 1 page, storage holes, central fold, letterhead, in overall very good condition.

Austrian composer (1896-1976). Fine original pencil sketch of the composer by Fritz Meisel (1942) signed and inscribed by Melichar, dated 1958. Size is 10 x 13.2 inches, in overall very good condition.

German composer (1801-1851), librettist and singer. Fine vintage lithograph with his image. Size is 8.25 x 11 inches, in very good condition.

British actor, theater director and writer (1887-1964), known mainly for his popular biographies which made him the leading British biographer of his time, in terms of commercial success. Set of 2 1 page typed letters signed, both dated in 1949 addressed to various editors of the Saturday Review of Literature, an American literary publication referring to his published review of a book about George Bernard Shaw. Also included is the 6 page typed review. Each of these three documents are 8 x 10 inches, with several creases and folds, but in otherwise very good condition. Not sold separately.

Set of signed programs and playbills with signatures of leading German and Austrian stage actors and 1 actress mostly from the 1950s. Several are complete programs containing all pages and covers, all written in German and many include photos of the artists. The performers include Erich Auer, Ernst Wurm, Hildegard Knef, Oskar Werner, and Walter Reyer among others. Most are about 5 x 8.5 inches in size. In excellent condition, not sold separately. 

Set of 7 autograph letters signed containing signatures by leading mostly European stage actors and actresses from the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century (ranging from 1854 to 1920), including  Adelaide Ristori, Dion Boucicault, Jeanne Julia Bartet, Mistinguett, and Virginia Marini. Sizes range from 3.5 x 4.75 inches to 6 x 7.5 inches. All are in very good condition, not sold separately.

American film and television actor (1892-1983), best known for his roles in screwball comedies; active from 1926 to 1978. Signed photograph, shown in that role, inscribed. Size is 8 x 10 inches, some creases on each corner, otherwise in very good condition. 

American actor (1881-1950), appeared in many silent films and later talking films. Signed postcard photograph, shown as himself. Photo by G. Smith Gardner, New York. Size is 3.25 x 5.5 inches, in excellent condition.

English stage and film actor (1908-1985), director, manager and author. Active between 1933 and 1982. Signed photograph, shown as himself, shown possibly with his daughters Vanessa and Lynn, both of whom also became famous actresses. Size is 4.75 x 6.75 inches, in very good condition.

American journalist (1855-1914), novelist, and short story writer. Album page with a text quote signed by him. Size is 4.7 x 6.4 inches, folds, in excellent condition.

British statesman (1809-1898). Autograph note signed by him and dated 1846 mounted on a larger piece of paper. Total size is 4.8 x 6.2 inches, 1 page, minor stains, folds, otherwise in excellent condition.

English politician and military officer (1754-1826), whose real name was Frances Rawdon-Hastings. Clip from the bottom of a letter or document with Moira's signature. Size is 7 x 2.25 inches, in very good condition.

British naval intelligence officer (1764-1840). His signature cut (probably the bottom of a letter or document) mounted on a larger piece of paper. Size is 8.1 x 1.75 inches, in very good condition.

French novelist (1804-1857). Autograph letter in French (sold untranslated) signed by him. Size is 4.2 x 5.3 inches, 3 written pages in one folded sheet, in very good condition.

American author (1827-1916) An album page signed by him with a short text quote dated March 1892. Size is 5 x 4 inches, loss of paper at the bottom, otherwise in good condition.

American actor (1845-1928). An album page signed by him and dated 1875 with a text quote. Size is 7.6 x 4.7 inches, minor stains, in excellent condition.

British statesman (1838-1923), and newspaper editor. Autograph letter in English signed by him, dated 1874. Size is 4.3 x 7 inches, 1 page, folds, in excellent condition.

American educator (1855-1934), director of Harvard Univerisity. Set of two autograph letters in English signed by him, dated 1882, sent to his friend the American philosopher Moncore D. Conway. Each one's size is 4.5 x 6.7 inches, four written pages each, central fold, in excellent condition.

American novelist (1819-1881). Autograph letter in English signed by him, dated August 21, 1874, about personal matters. Size is 5 x 8 inches, 1 page, ink partially faded but still visible, otherwise in very good condition.

English novelist (1811-1863), and illustrator. His signature cut (probably the bottom of a letter or document). Size is 1.75 x 0.8 inches, in very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is a carte-de-visite (CDV) of him. Size is 2.25 x 3.75 inches, mounting traces on verso, in very good condition.

English writer (1819-1900), philosopher, and art critic. Clip with his signature (probably the bottom of a letter). Size is 3 x .75 inches, in very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is an unsigned carte-de-visite (CDV) by Elliot & Fry (London). Size is 2.3 x 4.1 inches minor mounting traces on verso, otherwise in very good condition.

American Quaker poet (1807-1892) and advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. Small album page signed by him. Size is 4.2 x 5.5 inches, with some fading on ink, otherwise in excellent condition.

American composer and organist (1882-1972). Autograph note signed by him, dated May 19, 1951, rejecting the request for a recommendation letter. Size is 5.4 x 8.5 inches, folds, minor stains, with letterhead, in overall very good condition.

American poet (1833-1908), critic, and essayist.  Autograph note signed by him initialized as "E.C.S.". Size 4.7 x 7.6 inches, plus a card also signed by him, 4.9 x 3.8 inches in size, both in excellent condition.

American writer (1836-1907), poet, critic, and editor. Short poetry from his work "Two Moods" on a piece of paper signed by him. Size is 8 x 5 inches, folds, in very good condition.

English writer (1812-1870) and social critic, probably the greatest writer of the Victorian era.  Fine vintage carte-de-visite (CDV) with his image, an original by S. Poulton. Size is 2.3 x 4 inches, spotted rust, ink markings on verso, otherwise in excellent condition.

American journalist and writer (1864-1912), who assisted the political career of Theodor Roosevelt. Small clip (probably the bottom of a letter) mounted on a larger piece of paper with his signature. Total size is 5.4 x 4 inches, in very good condition. ALSO INCLUDED is a piece of paper with the signature of his mother Rebecca dated July 10, 1902, who was also an author and journalist (1831-1910). Size is 4.7 x 6.5 inches, in excellent condition.

American realist novelist (1837-1920), literary critic, and playwright, nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters". His signature on a card. Size is 5.1 x 3.25 inches, in excellent condition.

Swiss conductor (1908-1986). Autograph note in French signed by him as “V. Desarzens” dated April 17, 1960, to architect Henri-Robert Von der Mühll (1898-1980) :  "... I, and, we don't know if we... It doesn't matter: we will have "noted" what we thought was necessary, simply necessary, to note. I'll leave you musically with all 4 hands.". Size is 5.8 x 4.1 inches, in excellent condition. Original envelope INCLUDED.

Dutch soprano (1872-1939). Autograph letter in German signed by her, dated April 2, 1910, to the composer Georg Schumann (1866-1952), concerning the performance of his opera “Ruth” in Dordrecht :  “...I am pleased to inform you that your work was a great success in Dordrecht; the audience was very enthusiastic and did not stop applauding at the end, even after the first scene of Naomi and Ruth there was a great cheer. Mr. [Johann Eduard] Erdmann asked me to tell you about it when I would see you again, but since I do not know when that will be, I write it to you. I hope you will allow me to sing the part for you, which, although extremely difficult, suits me very well. The preparation was very short (in 2 1⁄2 days I had to sing it with a very swollen throat!), but Mr. E. was very pleased with the replacement for Ms. Strauch! - If you ever have time and I am free, I would be happy if you call me some time for the Ruth...”. Size is 5.2 x 6.7 inches each page, 4 written pages in one folded sheet, embossed letterhead, in very good condition.
